Black History Month 2014

Over Thanksgiving dinner I came up with an idea to make Black History month more locally relevant by producing a series of posters highlighting locally historically relevant African Americans. In order to be clear about the intent, I came up with the tagline "Black History is Memphis History". This tagline would appear on all the posters and either be accompanied by a quote, or by informative text about the subject.

The idea was to put a poster inside the Sunday Edition of the Commercial Appeal throughout February. This not only had an educational benefit, but also illustrated an example of the Commercial Appeal brand's vital role in Memphis community and history.

This project garnered positive reactions from the various departments at the CA. But, like many good ideas, budget quickly became a concern with regard to print costs and the number of posters that would need to be printed. Once it became clear that printing the posters was unfeasable, the project was scaled down into a social media campaign.
